What Is Kojic Acid?

Kojic acid is a naturally derived ingredient obtained through the controlled bio-fermentation of carbohydrates using fungal strains, most notably Aspergillus oryzae (Koji). Chemically identified as 5-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4H-pyran-4-one, this white, highly water-soluble crystalline powder functions as a chelating agent and skin conditioning component.

Product Applications

Skin Brightening Agent:

Recognized for its ability to improve the overall appearance of skin tone and promote a more radiant, luminous complexion. It is widely used in formulations designed to enhance skin clarity.

Tyrosinase Inhibitor:

Functions by interacting with tyrosinase, a key enzyme involved in the melanin production process within the skin. This interaction helps to modulate pigment formation at the enzymatic level.

Mechanism of Action (Copper Chelation):

Operates through the chelation of copper ions at the enzyme's active site. This mechanism helps to reduce the synthesis of melanin, contributing to a lighter skin appearance over time.

Improvement of Hyperpigmentation Appearance:

Commonly utilized in skincare products intended to improve the visual appearance of age spots, freckles, sun damage, and uneven skin tone.
