What Is Succinic Acid?

Succinic Acid, also known by its IUPAC name Butanedioic Acid (CAS 110-15-6), is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid that can be found in trace amounts in amber, as well as in various plant and animal tissues. It is produced through chemical synthesis, such as the catalytic hydrogenation of maleic anhydride, or via modern bio-based fermentation processes. The compound presents as a colorless, water-soluble crystalline solid with a distinct acid taste. Its primary active component is the succinate anion, which serves as a fundamental intermediate in the Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle), playing a critical role in cellular energy production and aerobic metabolism.

Product Applications

Food & Beverage Enhancement

It acts as a versatile acidulant, buffer, and flavor enhancer. It imparts a mild sour and slightly salty taste, contributing to the "umami" profile in sauces, soups, and alcoholic beverages, while also functioning as a preservative to extend shelf life.

Metabolic & Cellular Support

As a vital component of the citric acid cycle, it serves as an electron donor and helps activate cellular energy production. It supports healthy cellular metabolism and overall metabolic balance.

Biodegradable Material Synthesis

It is a crucial chemical building block in the green polymer market, widely used to synthesize Polybutylene Succinate (PBS), an eco-friendly, biodegradable plastic used in packaging and agricultural films.

Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic Applications

In medicine, it serves as a key intermediate for synthesizing active pharmaceutical ingredients and vitamins. In personal care, it functions as a pH adjuster and buffering agent, offering mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits for skincare formulations.
