Ter-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ)
What Is Ter-Butylhydroquinone?
Tert-butylhydroquinone, commonly abbreviated as TBHQ, is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant derived from hydroquinone. As a highly effective oil-soluble compound, TBHQ is widely recognized as a premier antioxidant and preservative in the food, personal care, and industrial sectors, specifically valued for its ability to maintain product stability without imparting unwanted odors or flavors.
Product Applications
Superior Antioxidant Capacity
TBHQ exhibits significantly stronger antioxidant properties compared to traditional alternatives like BHA, BHT, and Vitamin E. It effectively prevents lipid oxidation and rancidity in vegetable oils and fat-rich foods, extending shelf life by up to three to five times.
Thermal and Chemical Stability
This compound maintains high thermal stability, making it ideal for high-temperature processes such as deep frying and baking (withstanding temperatures over 230°C). Additionally, it does not discolor or react adversely in the presence of iron or copper ions.
Antimicrobial Action
Beyond its antioxidant role, TBHQ possesses notable bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties. It effectively inhibits the growth of various microorganisms, including Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and certain molds like Aspergillus flavus.
