What is Tributyrin?

Tributyrin is a short-chain fatty acid ester, white near oily liquid. Almost odorless, slightly fatty aroma. "It is readily soluble in ethanol, chloroform, and ether, and very poorly soluble in water." Natural products are found in beef tallow.

Tributyrin is produced by esterification of butyric acid and glycerol in a certain proportion under an acid catalyst. The digestion mechanism of tributyrin in animals is similar to that of lipids.
