Usnea extract
What Is Usnea extract?
Usnea extract is derived from Usnea species, a genus of lichen belonging to the family Usneaceae. The principal bioactive constituent of Usnea extract is usnic acid, a naturally occurring dibenzofuran derivative classified as a depside. In addition to usnic acid, the extract contains other lichen phenolic compounds such as barbatic acid, diffractic acid, and evernic acid.
Benefits
Natural preservative: Usnic acid exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria.
Anti-acne and sebum regulation: Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help reduce acne-causing bacteria and control excess sebum production.
Antioxidant protection: The polyphenolic constituents scavenge free radicals, helping to protect skin cells from oxidative stress and environmental damage.
Soothing and anti-irritant: Usnea extract demonstrates notable anti-inflammatory activity, which helps calm sensitive or irritated skin and supports skin barrier recovery.
Deodorizing agent: Its ability to inhibit odor-causing bacteria.
Applications
Usnea Extract can be added to cosmetics (e.g., acne treatment serums, oil-control toners, clarifying masks, blemish creams), personal care products (e.g., natural deodorants, antibacterial soaps, foot sprays, scalp treatments), and skin care formulations (e.g., soothing lotions for sensitive skin, anti-aging creams with preservative benefits, moisturizing gels).
