Tableting & Encapsulation

Encapsulation is the method by which dietary supplements are delivered in tablet or capsule form. Ingredient encapsulation protects ingredients from environmental factors until they are released or a desired interaction occurs. Depending on consumer requirements and the type of dietary supplement, methods other than packaging may be required.

Tablets are the most popular form and used to be the industry standard because of their ability to provide long-term stability to the drug, protecting it from environmental factors such as light, moisture, air, etc. Tablets also contain large amounts of inactive substances that can be used as a means of forming supplements, called excipients, which are then added to the tablets to compress and disintegrate when taken. The advantage of tablets is that they are inexpensive, can be customized for shape, size and aesthetics, and can also be better controlled for dissolution, thus extending the time and speeding up the release of nutrients. For products with large nutrient content per serving, tablets are the most popular method of administration.
